Scenic ride along 6A

If you have nothing to do and just want to soak up the beauty of the cape, then you need to jump in the car, roll down your windows and take a drive along 6A, also known as "The Old King's Highway". Smell the salt marshes, stop at a few antique shops, visit a windmill, or sit at the beach and take in the view of Cape Cod Bay.

Below is a brief history taken from: http://capecodroute6a.com/wp/ . This is a fabulous site which gives you all the information you need including: history, the towns you will pass through, maps of 6A and how to navigate your way, as well as shopping and events taking place along the way. Keep this site set in your phone for this beautiful excursion.
.
The King’s Highway in 1931
"From its apparent beginning as a Native American trail, Route 6A evolved into a principal east-west cart path for early Cape Cod farmers and other settlers. In the late 17th century it became an extension of the Plymouth Colony’s “King’s Highway.”
With the rise of 18th century maritime activities on Cape Cod, sea captain homes, taverns and other commercial activities sprouted along the route, giving occasion to Boston-Provincetown stagecoaches to stop.
In the next century, the demise of maritime industries prompted a focus on cranberry production in the district. Meantime, residents who had seen the corridor stripped of trees to support farming and shipbuilding planted new shade trees. Many of these, now mature, grace the roadway today.
By the early 20th century as automobiles replaced horse-drawn carriages and tourism developed on the Cape, the highway required a paved surface. Preservation efforts ensued, and today Route 6A remains faithful to the original trail in most areas."

Ice cream!!

I've been lucky enough (or maybe I shouldn't say lucky, as I look at the scale!) to have my daughter working at one of the yummiest spots for ice cream this summer. This is actually her second summer at Emack & Bolio's in Orleans. Check out their link: http://www.emackandbolios.com/

Emack's has many delicious flavors of ice cream to try, as well as frozen yogurt and sorbet. They offer a full expresso bar and a health bar with shakes, smoothies, and frozen juices. Ofcourse you can order ice cream cakes (unbelievable!), ice cream pizza, and purchase apparel with the many Emack & Bolio's logos. My favorite flavor this summer has been Serious Chocolate Addiction. It's the richest chocolate icecream with chocolate chips and fudge chunks throughout. Sinful. This summer the town of Orleans had its first annual Orleans Ice Cream Cup soccer tournament. Four local ice cream businesses participated: Emack & Bolio's, Sundae School, Local Scoop, and Ice Cream Café. This was just a fun competition set up by the girls' soccer coach at Nauset (our high school). The Ice Cream Café won the tournament, but I'd say every day that Emack's wins in the best ice cream tournament!!

Truro Vineyards

So , another wonderful place to visit on the Cape is Truro Vineyards. It's about another half hour east of Brewster on route 6, on the way to Provincetown. (http://www.trurovineyardsofcapecod.com/‎)
(image retrieved from: http://brendanbenfeeney.com/galleries/nouns-persons-places-things/) I have been several times with girlfriends for wine tastings. You must participate in this if you visit and purchase the glass for $8, I think. A fun keepsake. I went recently with my hubby to sit on the beautiful grounds and enjoy a glass of wine. We sat in a double Adirondack chair and soaked in the sun and scenery. There is a lovely gift shop with all kinds of wine goodies and wine to purchase. Truro Vineyards is a family business. The property was built in 1813 and served as a farm for many years. From Memorial Day through Columbus Day you can take guided tours through the vineyard and the winery. It is fascinating to hear about the process of growing, harvesting, and making the wine.
(image retrieved from: http://www.newenglandmagazine.com/2011/07/18/truro-vineyards-more-than-grapes-and-wine/) If you check out the website, listed at the top of the page, you will see the many events they have scheduled for the summer. My friends like to participate in the wine stomping in the fall. I have missed the last few years, but plan to make it this year!

Went down to the beach with a friend last night just to relax. I feel so lucky that this view is minutes away.

The Ocean House, Dennisport MA

The Ocean House Restaurant is located in Dennisport ( http://oceanhouserestaurant.com/home/). It is not found in my little town of Brewster, but I wanted to blog about it because it is a restaurant you don't want to miss when you are visiting the Cape. It's tucked away, but worth pulling out the GPS to find it. The view is magical, as you can see from this picture. You will be lucky to get one of the window seats in the summer. It is a good idea to have a reservation. Parking is extremely limited and you will need a few extra dollars in your wallet to tip the valet. As you can see, this restaurant is "fine dining". The presentation of the food is worth taking a picture of! If you love seafood, this is the place to go.

If you aren't in the mood for a meal, but want a fun time with friends overlooking Nantucket Sound while listening to live music, then you need to hit their beach bar.

This was the view last night. I met some friends for a few hours at the beach bar. There was a wonderful singer, Harry French, rocking out Jimmy Buffet and Zac Brown tunes on his guitar. It was a perfect little escape.

The Chronis!!

After writing my blog about pizza today, I had to go out and order my favorite from Morelli's...the Chronis!! Loaded with toppings tonight! Delicious!! :)

Where to get pizza in Brewster

So I was thinking about restaurants in town and whether I should make those part of my blog, but I decided to stick with something I love...pizza! I could truly have pizza every night of the week and be happy!! I'm going to share with you my three favorite places to go in Brewster for pizza.

The first is called Morelli's Taverna on Underpass Road (http://www.morellistaverna.com/pizza.php). It is only a few buildings down from my school, which is very convenient!!

(image retrieved from: http://www.capecodonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20130606/ENTERTAIN/306070301 Click to read an article about the opening of Morelli's in June 2013)

Morelli's used to be Ardeos, which was managed by Kathy Morelli. It had the most amazing Greek pizza which I always ordered. When they closed this year I was so sad because no place in town could make a pizza quite like it. I was thrilled when I heard Kathy was going to open her own restaurant, and wouldn't you know, her pizza is even better!! It is thin crust pizza and my favorite is The Chronis. Here's what's on it...House aioli, green peppers, red onions, feta, kalamata olives, diced tomatoes, spinach, pepperoncini, and mozzarella cheese. Truly delicious! Morelli's has a wonderful menu of Italian fare and definitely worth a stop. Pizza is served until midnight in July and August, too!!

The second is Brewster Pizza right on 6A in Foster Square ( http://brewsterpizzaandbrew.com/).

(image retrieved from: http://www.wickedlocal.com/brewster/topstories/x1582407998/Brewster-liquor-licenses-shelved-for-now-at-El-Guapos-and-Brewster-Pizza)

You are guaranteed to have a delicious, traditional pizza, calzone, or sub. My daughter only wants her cheese pizza from Brewster Pizza and it is the only place my other daughter can get the perfect white pizza!! My husband's favorite is the steak bomb. I enjoy their pepperoni. Basically, you can't go wrong with any of them. They offer delivery, too. There is a sports bar attached next door, as well.

The third is Laurino's Tavern and Restaurant on 6A (http://laurinostavern.com/).

Laurino's is a family style restaurant serving more Italian favorites. It is pretty well known for it's specialty pizzas. I have two favorites and generally order both! The first is shrimp scampi. It has olive oil, garlic, capers, roasted red peppers, shrimp, and cheddar cheeses. You won't find one like it around! The other is buffalo chicken which has grilled chicken breast, wing sauce and cheddar cheese, served with a side of bleu cheese dressing for dipping. I have to fight my husband for this one! The owner is our school cafeteria manager, Donna Drown (a little shout out!).

So, those are my three bests picks for pizza if you are visiting my little town of Brewster. Enjoy!!

Brewster General Store

When traveling through my little town of Brewster, one of the places you must stop is the Brewster General Store on route 6A. www.brewsterstore.com/

       (image retrieved from http://www.flickr.com/photos/papadunes/4825755023/)

The building was built in 1852 as a church and was converted to a general store in 1866. It still has the charm of that time with the creaky wooden floors, nostalgic decorations, penny candy (my favorite), as well as kitchen gadgets, gifts, cards, toys, etc. You can even play the nickelodeon for a quarter!!

When we first moved to the Cape, my husband actually worked mornings at the general store. He loved how the old locals came in every morning for their pastries, coffee and the paper. They would sit in the middle of the store by the old coal stove on cold mornings and gab. On nice days they'd sit out front on the benches. You are sure to be be greeted with a friendly smile from someone sitting on those benches when you visit. (Or perhaps by a few little bunnies during Easter!).
 (image retrieved from http://blog.brewsterbythesea.com/)

The windows of the store are always dressed for the season. My husband even got to put up the infamous Christmas tree on the little roof of the porch for the holiday season! (There are certain decorations we Brewster folk expect to see at the store.)

Be sure to make a stop next door to the Brewster Scoop for homemade icecream. A perfect visit!

ECOMP 6019 Cape Cod Blog

July 11, 2013

So I was out for lunch with a friend today at Hole in One (http://theholecapecod.com/) and I mentioned how I have to start a blog. I was looking for suggestions for what I could blog about that would be fun, interesting, and easy to talk about. I didn't want to write an education blog because I will be reading many for this class. Wine? Certainly could be fun, but probably not the most appropriate choice! :) Beaches? How about Cape Cod? Hmm, good idea. I mentioned it to my daughter when I got home and her first thought was Cape Cod, too. So there we have it! I shall blog about the Cape, which has been my home since 1990.

My favorite part of the Cape would be the beautiful beaches. I prefer them during the off-season when they are not so busy. I live in Brewster, so the beaches that are available to me on my beach pass are the bay beaches off 6A. They are perfect for children because of the calm water and wonderful opportunities to explore the tidal flats at low tide. I took my children to Crosby Beach for years to swim in the shallow, calm, warmer water and to find hermit crabs, horseshoe crabs, moonsnails, and to collect shells. This is the view of Crosby (just the other night!) as you walk from the parking lot. Simply gorgeous and soothing to the soul as soon as your feet touch the sand.

\
If you are looking to explore the bay beaches, or even the ponds in Brewster, I am attaching the link for the Chamber of Commerce's site of Brewster beaches. There is a map and it includes information on parking and fees.

Being a teacher in Brewster, I get to take my students to these lovely beaches for field trips! We are so lucky that they are right down the street. I know I take living here for granted and don't take advantage of all the Cape has to offer. I'm thinking this blog will be a chance for me to explore even more...to have my own little field trips, to appreciate the Cape's beauty a bit more and share it  with you.
