Brewster General Store

When traveling through my little town of Brewster, one of the places you must stop is the Brewster General Store on route 6A. www.brewsterstore.com/

The building was built in 1852 as a church and was converted to a general store in 1866. It still has the charm of that time with the creaky wooden floors, nostalgic decorations, penny candy (my favorite), as well as kitchen gadgets, gifts, cards, toys, etc. You can even play the nickelodeon for a quarter!!

When we first moved to the Cape, my husband actually worked mornings at the general store. He loved how the old locals came in every morning for their pastries, coffee and the paper. They would sit in the middle of the store by the old coal stove on cold mornings and gab. On nice days they'd sit out front on the benches. You are sure to be be greeted with a friendly smile from someone sitting on those benches when you visit. (Or perhaps by a few little bunnies during Easter!).

The windows of the store are always dressed for the season. My husband even got to put up the infamous Christmas tree on the little roof of the porch for the holiday season! (There are certain decorations we Brewster folk expect to see at the store.)

Be sure to make a stop next door to the Brewster Scoop for homemade icecream. A perfect visit!

  1. I had posted a comment about this blog last week, but I do not see it. Your pictures of the general store remind me of some of the old stores in some of the smaller towns in WY. I grew up in WY and you could find the same kinds of merchandise for very cheap. We always had to stop in one the stores for their famous ice cream. I don't think it was homemade, but boy was it tasty! They still serve the ice cream there and people always make it a point to stop for some!

  2. This place has some much charm. I'm thinking about planning a trip down there just to get a taste of the local flavor--especially the ice cream. I just love fresh ice cream in the summer that you can eat outside in the warm weather while walking around. Very neat that your husband was able to be a part of those traditions your town has. I think they are so important and something that really helps build community. You are lucky to live in a town that has this!
